How I Learned to Stop Chasing the Lowest Price and Start Thinking Total Cost

An administrative buyer shares a real-world lesson about connector sourcing: why the cheapest quote ended up costing more, and how switching to Hirose connectors changed her approach to procurement.

It was a Tuesday morning in March 2024 when my inbox exploded. Our engineering team had finalized a new IoT device that needed a SIM card connector – the kind that holds a nano-SIM for cellular connectivity. They wanted 500 units for the pilot run, and I had exactly two weeks to source them.

I did what any administrative buyer would do: I grabbed the spec sheet, searched a few distributor websites, and collected quotes. The price range was insane. One vendor offered $0.29 per connector. Another – a well-known Japanese brand called Hirose – quoted $0.62. That’s more than double.

Like most beginners (rookie mistake, I know), I went with the $0.29 option. Big mistake.

The Cheap Connector Disaster

The connectors arrived on time, which was a relief. But within a week of assembly, the production line stopped. The SIM card latches were inconsistent – some were too stiff, others too loose. Our techs spent hours reseating cards. Then the RF performance tests failed: signal loss was about 3 dB higher than spec. Our platinum bp5450 cellular module (a module we use for fleet tracking) wouldn’t register on the network reliably.

I called the vendor. They said “our product meets industry standards.” But they couldn’t provide a proper test report. (Red flag.) I escalated to our engineering manager, who explained that the contact resistance was drifting after thermal cycling – a common issue with low-cost SIM connectors that lack proper plating thickness.

We had to rework 480 units manually. That cost us $1,200 in labor, $200 in replacement connectors, and a week of delay. Add the $145 I already paid for the cheap ones, and my “bargain” turned into $1,545. The Hirose quote? $310 for the same quantity. I ate $1,235 of department budget (unfortunately).

The Turning Point

After that fiasco, I went back to the Hirose product page. The specific series I looked at was the VS series (their SIM card connector lineup – the product page was titled “VS Series SIM Card Connector | Hirose”). I called PT Hirose Electric Indonesia – their local office – and spoke with a sales engineer who actually knew the product. He sent me a detailed datasheet, a 3D model, and a reliability report showing insertion/withdrawal cycles tested to 5,000, contact resistance below 50 mΩ after 100 hours at 85°C/85% RH. He even offered to send 10 free samples.

That kind of support doesn’t show up on a price list. It’s part of what I now call total cost of ownership (TCO) – i.e., not just the unit price but all the costs you can’t see until something goes wrong. Shipping, testing, rework, downtime, and lost credibility with your internal customers.

What I Now Do Differently

It took me 3 years and about 150 orders to understand that vendor relationships matter more than vendor capabilities (gradual realization). I used to think a connector is a connector is a connector. Now I look at:

  • Spec compliance: Does the supplier provide third-party test data?
  • Supply chain stability: Can they deliver consistently?
  • Engineering support: Will they help if we hit a snag?
  • Return/rework policy: What happens when (not if) something fails?

Hirose ticked all the boxes. Their floating contact technology (which compensates for misalignment in automated assembly) saved us from another common headache. And their Indonesian sales office meant we got local support in our time zone.

The Bottom Line

I’m not saying every Hirose product is the right choice for every application. But chasing the cheapest unit price without considering TCO is a surefire way to blow your budget and your reputation. I only believed that advice after ignoring it and paying $1,235 for the lesson (reverse validation).

Since then, I’ve switched to Hirose for all our SIM card connectors and board-to-board connectors. Our defect rate dropped from about 8% to below 0.5%. My engineering team trusts my sourcing decisions. And my boss stopped getting calls from angry project managers.

If you’re making a connector decision right now, I’d suggest: calculate TCO before you compare quotes. Don’t hold me to this, but from my experience the expensive vendor often turns out cheaper in the long run. Take it from someone who learned the hard way.

Engineering reminder: verify connector selection against insertion loss dB, PIM dBc, mating durability, and relevant standards such as IEEE 802.3bt or ITU-T G.652.D before release.
