- U.FL / W.FL — RF, not really 6-pin territory, but buyers often lump them in when someone says "Hirose cable."
- FX series — high-speed board-to-board, mostly picked by engineers, not me.
The practical takeaway: "6-pin Hirose" is not a spec. It's a starting point. Write the full part number in your RFQ, and if your engineer hands you something that looks like an internal code, ask them for the datasheet page.
The medical device angle (yes, the blood pressure monitor thing)
Around the same time, we had a small service contract where our team was refurbishing a run of consumer-grade monitors—the kind of unit some buyers internally call "C300 class." If you've ever wondered how to use a blood pressure monitor, the honest answer for sourcing purposes is: the user-facing instructions are easy; the parts inside are not. Those devices typically use a small circular connector on the cuff line, and it's often not the same pinout as the last manufacturer's. - Lead time that's "in stock" for 100 but "6 weeks" for 500

The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even when the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. I've stopped being surprised by this.
What this doesn't cover
My experience is based on maybe 200 connector-related orders, almost all of them for domestic operations and standard-industrial quantities. If you're doing high-mix low-volume EMS work, procurement-grade sourcing for automotive, or anything with a PPAP requirement, my checklist will look comically small next to yours.
I can only speak to the buyer's seat. If you're the engineer picking the part number, the calculus is completely different—you should be arguing about impedance and cycle life, not how fast the distributor ships cut tape.
And if you find a Hirose part that's dramatically cheaper than everyone else, that's not a bargain. That's usually a question you haven't asked yet.
